It’s not often that we’re left speechless by some pretty insane music but the past month has managed to see our chins hit the floor more often than a Premiership footballer, beginning with all-girl trio ‘One Sixth Of Tommy’ and ‘Get People’. Now however, there’s another name to add to that list, and they’re called ‘Capital Cities’.
Consisting of Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian, ‘Capital Cities’ are an exciting electro-pop duo from Los Angeles and my word how we’re in love with their first single ‘Safe and Sound’. It’s taken from their debut self-titled EP due for release on June 18th, and it’s a catchy and sunny electronic pop scorcher bound to make your dance-infused taste buds sizzle.
The pair originally met in 2008 and shortly after formed a composing team. Work for high-profiled campaigns soon saw them creating catchy jingles and hooks left, right and centre, with it soon becoming apparent their musical chemistry could be taken to a much more personal and demanding level. That’s exactly what they did do, and in 2010, ‘Capital Cities’ was officially born.
It’s incredible to think that the two have come such a long way in such a short period of time, yet everything about Capital Cities screams genius at us. With what seems an incredibly simple alias in ‘Capital Cities’ to us just swarms with outside-of-the-box tendancies, and their music further emulates that hugely impressive first opinion. Along with a memorable name comes some brilliant music – ‘Safe and Sound’ is just one of five tracks to feature on the debut EP and they all hold their own in what seems an EP jam-packed full of life, energy and unusual yet fantastic sounds.
The EP itself was the product of the duo themselves, having written, mixed and produced all five tracks that feature on it. The pairs public bio reads that they aren’t ‘afraid to let the Southern California sunshine seep into their music’, and we could not agree more. I suppose it doesn’t help that the UK rarely sees sunshine anymore, but there’s always that odd spell of weather that really gets you in the mood for the summer, right? Well, our rare spell of bright and beautiful weather is the music industry’s rare bit of wisdom and originality, and it comes in the form of this EP.
The pair have kindly allowed a full stream of their forthcoming debut EP on their bandcamp page, and we highly advise you to take a listen here. The first single ‘Safe and Sound’ can be streamed below:
If you’re like us and instantly became addicted to the track, you need not worry as Neon Gold have ‘Safe and Sound’ available as a free download on their blog page here, or alternatively from their bandcamp page here.
Capital Cities’ debut EP is out on June 18th, however whether the EP is released internationally at the same in is unclear.
